Brooklyn was originally populated by the Lenape people. The area was first settled by the Dutch in 1624 as one of the six original townships that made up New Netherland. In 1646, it officially became a borough and was given the name “Breuckelen” after a town in Holland. In 1816, it was renamed Brooklyn and became one of the five boroughs that make up New York City in 1898.
